Basilicata, an ancient and wild region.
Basilicata is an ancient, rugged, and at times wild region. A magical and archaic land, intimately steeped in unyielding traditions and folk beliefs passed down in the shadow of hearths. In its small perched villages, magical-healing practices and pagan rites fused for centuries with Christian liturgy, giving rise to a unique magical-religious syncretism of deep anthropological value.
This space was created to explore Basilicata through fresh eyes, embarking on a mysterious journey through its untouched nature, folk traditions, lost myths, small yet great miracles, and strange stories that have survived the wear of time.
The Ouroboros—the alchemical serpent biting its own tail to form an infinite circle—is the emblem of this project. It is an ancient symbol representing the cyclical energy that consumes itself only to continuously regenerate, the nature of all things that wear out and are reborn from their own ashes.
Basilicata Mistero has also passed through a phase of transition and silence, but as the Ouroboros teaches, energy is never destroyed: it transforms. Today, this project is reborn richer, more mature, and more complete than before, ready to narrate the less visible side of our land.
The heart of this rebirth is Arkana, an episodic web video series in which I take you with me to discover remarkable places, forgotten legends, and enigmatic stories firsthand. We will visit sites imbued with a strong sense of mystery, such as the ghost village of Craco, shrouded in tales of witches and sentinel crows, and we will explore the roots of ancient peasant rituals like the Notte dei Cucibocca in Montescaglioso.
Alongside the videos, you will find in-depth articles on historical figures with controversial lives, interviews with anthropologists and local historians, reviews of thematic books, and a photo gallery dedicated to capturing the chiaroscuro of an extraordinary land. I will show you a different side of Lucania, because we know all too well that the brighter the sunlight, the darker and more fascinating the shadows it casts.
Welcome to Basilicata Mistero.
