In the vast kingdom of music, there is a note that stands above the others due to its solemn character and harmonic importance: D (known as Re in solfège). This note, with a fundamental frequency of approximately 293.665 Hz (in standard equal temperament), forms the third note of the natural scale of C major and the fundamental pillar of the key of D major.
In the Italian language, the name of the note (Re) finds an evocative linguistic resonance with the word "Re", meaning king or monarch. This linguistic assonance charges the note with strong symbolic value: the melodic king reigns over the musical staff, guiding the dynamics and tensions of the other notes with its imperious presence. The key of D is historically associated with feelings of majesty, nobility, and orchestral triumph, leaving a solemn mark on the listener.
However, my composition "Nightmares of a Melodic King" (Incubi di un re melodico) explores the flip side of this harmonic royalty. The piece investigates the shadows, obsessions, and dissonant tensions hiding behind the pursuit of the perfect melody. It is the sonic narrative of nightmares tormenting the sovereign of the staff, where the certainty of the pure 293 Hz frequency clashes with distorted sounds and rarefied atmospheres.
The track represents an important chapter in my electronic and experimental music productions, joining the cyberpunk track Blackrain and the research on the authenticity of analog media described in Non silenzio.
Above is a one-minute audio preview of the track.
