A silent journey into the dense forests of the Lucanian Apennines in search of the black truffle.

The documentary short film "Black Nugget" (Pepita Nera) leads us into the secret heart of the dense forests of the Lucanian Apennines in Basilicata, closely following Sandro Tridenti, a local expert truffle hunter, during one of his search days.
The video opens with evocative shots of the forest wrapped in a silent carpet of autumn leaves damp with dew. Basilicata, with its moist, calcareous, and fertile soil, represents an ideal habitat for the spontaneous growth of exceptionally valuable truffles, both white and black.
The narrative core of the film is the close and silent bond between Sandro and his faithful Spinone dog. The dog's sensitive sense of smell and the man's deep knowledge of the forest's secrets fuse in a silent synergy honed over years. The camera follows their attentive movements among moss, beech trees, and centuries-old oaks, capturing the suspense and emotion preceding the discovery of the truffle, nicknamed the Black Nugget.
The climax of the video is the magical moment of discovery: the camera lowers to ground level to carefully capture Sandro's gnarled hands as, using the traditional truffle hoe, he masterfully extracts the intact subterranean fungus, revealing its intense aroma and extraordinary quality. His passion shines through clearly and genuinely in every single frame.
This video reportage is part of my visual research aimed at documenting the lesser-known human and natural excellence of the Lucanian territory, fitting seamlessly into the slow storytelling philosophy of the project Un giro in Basilicata.
