In an attempt to capture the essence and atmosphere of a place, photography offers a precious visual window, but video adds a level of movement and narrative that goes beyond a simple still shot. In 2010, when I embarked on my photographic journey to explore and tell the story of Basilicata, I felt that static images alone could not convey the full sensory richness and dynamism of the land. Hence the choice to experiment with video direction through the web series Postcards from Basilicata.
This first video postcard is dedicated to Vaglio Basilicata, a medieval village located a few kilometers from Potenza. Vaglio is not only a village of Lucanian stone; it is a place guarding immense history, home to important archaeological excavations such as the ancient settlement of Serra di Vaglio and the renowned Sanctuary of Rossano di Vaglio, the most important place of worship dedicated to the goddess Mefitis, an Italic deity of waters and fertility.
With this video postcard, I wanted to document the solemnity of ancient ruins, the rusticated portals of the historic center, the quiet life breathed among narrow paved streets, and the whisper of the constant wind blowing over the heights surrounding the village.
Vaglio Basilicata is part of the slow journey path including:
