Postcard from Vietri

In an attempt to capture the essence and atmosphere of a place, photography offers a precious visual window, but video adds a level of movement and narrative that goes beyond a simple shot. In 2010, I embarked on this photographic journey to rediscover my homeland. However, I felt that still images could not fully transmit the emotions, warmth, and vitality of Lucanian villages. This expressive need prompted me to explore the video medium with the web series Postcards from Basilicata.
This fourth video postcard is dedicated to Vietri di Potenza, historically known as the "Gateway to Basilicata" due to its geographic border location, resting along the junction of the Sicignano-Potenza highway.
Perched on a rocky spur overlooking the gorge of the Melandro River, Vietri welcomes visitors with its characteristic white houses and ancient alleys. The village is famous for its artisanal production of top-quality extra virgin olive oil and for historical and artistic murals enriching the walls of houses in the center, depicting scenes of daily life and peasant memories.
Through this video postcard, I wanted to capture the beauty of surrounding rolling hills, the genuine warmth and spontaneity of its inhabitants, and that constant wind blowing through valleys, telling stories of hospitality and continuous passages.
